Jobs - in Spotsylvania

I promised to bring higher paying jobs to Spotsy - and we've seen two of the biggest wins for jobs in Spotsy over the past 3 plus years that we have seen in decades.  Promise delivered.

Although I feel retail jobs are important - my focus has been on bringing higher paying professional jobs to our area.  This both keeps commuters off I95 and broadens the County's tax base - making it possible to reduce taxes in the future but obtain the same revenue streams to Spotsylvania.

Our two biggest wins have been the Dominion Raceway and even bigger - the $125,000,000 dollar facility to be built by LIDL - which alone will bring 80 jobs with an average salary of $80,000 each.  Additionally LIDL alone will bring additional revenue to the County in the amount of over $900,000 / year.

Looking forward, I have started work to bring a major military command to Spotsylvania, taking commuters (approximately 3,000 professional government jobs) off the road and high paying government professional jobs here.  I've already discussed with the Virginia Secretary of Veteran's Affairs, the Virginian Secretary of Commerce, and several Congressional and State elected leaders.  I am also focused on brining a Veterans Administration Health Care Center with over 100,000 square feet and over 100 medical (doctors, nurses, and other professional staff) to Spotsylvania over the next four years.

Please see below for details on jobs brought to Spotsylvania as well as details for plans for more professional jobs here in the future - that will increase our quality of life and take more of us off I95.

Lidl - $125M // 900K/yr revenue - 200 plus jobs - 80 over $80k salaries

LIDL is the world's 5th largest retailer, has 10,000 stores in 26 European countries and had $80 BILLION in sales in 2011.

Spotsylvania was picked by LIDL for their first venture into the United States because of our low tax rates and an up-front county investment of $1.4 million ($1 million to match the Governor's Opportunity Fund / $400K grant to defray /offset development costs).  The board of supervisors also authorized other incentives to reduce taxes and fees for LIDL - but the County would not be getting these fees in the first place if LIDL was not here.

We will recapture this investment of $1.4M in less than two years based off the $903K/year Spotsylvania County will receive in real estate taxes.  The property that will generate this revenue to the County was generating approximately 10K/year before this move.

What does Spotsylvania receive?:
  • $903,000/year in real estate taxes over 17 years = $15,000,000 (a broadened tax base - meaning Citizens pay less)
  • 80 jobs with an average salary of $80,000/year!!!
  • 120 jobs with hourly wages between 13 - 15 dollars/hour
  • $51.2 Million in estimated economic activity during the distribution center construction period.
  • $34.8 Million/year in post construction economic activity

I am pleased to be a part of bringing one of the best economic / job opportunities to Spotsy that has occurred in the past decade.  If elected to be your representative - I will continue to make bringing professional jobs to Spotsylvania County one of my highest priorities.

Dominion raceway

Dominion Raceway will open soon on the NE quadrant of the I95/mile marker 118 Thornburg intersection.  This is a great example of not only new jobs to Spotsylvania County but also great entertainment value to our residents at no additional cost.

The board of supervisors did cooperate with the opportunity by slightly changing our noise ordinance and moving the date forward for interstate modifications at mile marker 118 that were already on the plans to do.

Besides brining more jobs to Spotsylvania County - and hosting races - Dominion Raceway will also have drive in movies and host concert venues for our residents to attend.

Veterans administration

Another huge win for Spotsylvania County - 10,000 square foot Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic to open Nov/Dec 2015!!!

I became aware of the possibility of expanding our local Veteran's care in our region - and alerted the County's Economic Development department of this.  When the request for bid came out - Spotsylvania was NOT included in the area (the City of Fredericksburg was - but we were not).

Our Economic Development Department got busy - requested to open up the bidding to Spotsylvania as well and . . . this request was granted.

One of our local contractors won the bid and now we will have a facility in Spotsy to take care of more of our Veterans and - more Doctor / Nurse / LPN /  Psychologist - professional jobs right to Spotsy while also allowing our Spotsy Veterans a shorter drive to get the care they deserve - another Win - Win for Spotsy.

Also - please see VA Health Care Center below  - this gives Spotsy a better chance for locating the HCC here in the future.

CMC Rebar - keeping local business here

CMC Rebar was well on their way to moving out of Spotsylvania County to King George County - taking 40 very nice jobs with them.

Instead they are staying here, expanding with 18 more jobs and an additional $200K/year revenue to Spotsylvania County as a result of their expansion!!!

Future professional Jobs work - in progress now

Major USMC Command

Working closely with fellow retired Marine and supervisor Tim McLaughlin - we have been driving toward bringing a major (3,000 members = 3,000 jobs) USMC Command to Spotsylvania County.  Our soon to open VRE station makes this possibility even more real.

A good number of these 3,000 people already live in Spotsylvania County - so this would be a win-win by taking cars on I95 off I95, shortening the commute time of those who already work at this major USMC Command and shorting the commute of others that commute on I95 by the resulting reduced local traffic getting onto I95.

Tim and I have discussed this idea with the Virginia Secretary of Commerce, the Virginia Secretary of Veteran's Affairs, leaders in the General Assembly Senate and House, our elected leaders in the 1st and 7th Congressional District and leaders in the United States Marine Corps.

We are well on our way to making this happen - and by the way - once this happens other government supporting businesses and contractors will follow in relocating to Spotsylvania County - taking even more of our commuters off the road north and making the road north less congested for those who still take it.

If I am elected to represent you for another four years - bringing these jobs to Spotsylvania County will be one of my highest priorities.

VA Health Care Center

In the next 3 - 5 years, the Veterans Administration has plans to open a 100,000 square foot Health Care Center somewhere between the VA hospital in Richmond and the VA hospital in Washington, D.C.  My home is exactly half way between the two - to the mile.

I'm not proposing my home become the site for this great opportunity - 100 plus professional medical field jobs to our area - and a great source of care for our local Wounded Warriors and Veterans - but I will try my best to bring this opportunity to Spotsylvania County!!!

Not only are these the kind of jobs we need more of (Doctor / Nurse / Mental Health) in the form of high salaries locally - but it is also a great opportunity to increase the Veterans who reside in our area health care and lesson their commute times for care in either Richmond or Washington D.C.

Spotsylvania County's win of the 10,000 square foot clinic was a step toward bringing the HCC here to Spotsy.

If I am elected to represent you for another four years - this will also be one of my highest priorities over the next four years.
